Vehicle Crime

Talks have been had with car manufacturers and dealers when specific problems with certain makes of car have been identified.

What are we tackling?

  • South Yorkshire Police recorded crime statistics
  • Information provided by the courts
  • Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme statistics and analysis

How are we tackling it?

  • To develop creative ways of getting across messages to local people and visitors not to leave property, valuable or otherwise, on view in a parked vehicle.  This will dramatically reduce that vehicle’s risk of being broken into
  • Ensure key car parks in the city are as secure as possible
  • Apply new regulations to motor salvage operators

Education and re-assurance
  • Awareness training delivered to schools by LEA, Youth Offending Team staff and police to alert young people to the risks involved in becoming involved in vehicle crime
  • Use of the Positive Activities for Young People Programme to divert young people into positive activity at high risk periods and in high risk areas
  • Alert key venues to the risk of car crime e.g. football stadiums, to work in partnership to educate drivers to risk
  • City-wide advertising campaign to warn drivers not to leave valuables on display in parked vehicles

Prevention/diversion
  • Use of the Intensive Surveillance and Supervision Programme (ISSP) for young offenders
  • Use of the Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme, where vehicles seen to have property on display are contacted by the DVLA to alert them to risk and direct contact with owners of these vehicles from Sheffield police

Enforcement
  • Strict Bail/Curfew conditions for those offenders awaiting court for vehicle crime offences
  • Use of Acceptable Behaviour Contracts, Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) including ASB conviction where appropriate
  • Use of SNPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology which alerts police to ‘suspect’ vehicles and potential offenders
  • Improved Forensic examination to increase detection rates
  • Operations based on vehicle deposition sites

Re-engagement
  • Ensure vehicle crime offenders are included in the Prolific and Other Priority Offenders Strategy.
